Funeral services for 88-year old Lila Hopping from Oakland will be Monday, May 3, 2021, at 11:00 AM at the Oakland United Methodist Church. Visitation with the family will take place at the church one hour prior to the funeral. Interment will be in the Oaklawn Cemetery at Oakland. Rieken Vieth Funeral Home in Oakland is assisting the family with arrangements.
Lila Lee Hopping, the daughter of Elmer and Helen (Hull) Stapleton, was born May 28, 1932, in Lyons, KS. Lila died April 29, 2021, at her home in Oakland, IA, at the age of 88 years, 11 months, and 1 day.
Lila attended school in Lyons, graduating from Lyons High School with the class of 1950. After graduating, she began working for the Lyons Phone Company. On February 7, 1953, she was united in marriage to Wayne Hopping at the Methodist Parsonage in Lyons, KS. Three children were born to this union: Sherry, Russell, and Joel. They lived in Sterling and Lyons for several years, before moving to Oakland, IA. Wayne died on December 19, 2011. Lila lived in Oakland until the time of her death.
Lila was a member of the Oakland United Methodist Church, where she had been active in the UMW and had taught Sunday School. Lila had served as Worthy Matron in Eastern Star and had been active in Rainbow Girls. She enjoyed reading, gardening, and had bowled on a Tuesday bowling league. She had also been a member of a book club and The Mothers Club.
Lila is preceded in death by her husband Wayne; her parents; and her sister Fern.
She is survived by her daughter, Sherry Shipman and husband Chris of Austell, GA; her two sons, Russell Hopping and wife Candy of Oakland, IA, and Joel Hopping and wife Debbie of Council Bluffs, IA; her grandchildren: Jason, Matthew, Heather, Stacy, John, and Blake; her great-grandchildren: Justin, Elizabeth, Jacob, Madison, Samantha, and Joe; and her sister Pat Komarek of Hutchinson, KS.
