(Harlan) Harlan girls track coach Doug Renkly says good weather early on in the practice calendar helped them get a lot done.
The Cyclones will be led this spring by a big and capable senior class. “Liv Freund is going to be one of our better 800 runners, we have Brecken Van Baale, Kaia Bieker, Olivia Anderson, Abi Albertsen, we have a real solid group here. Ashley Hall hasn’t been on the track since her freshman year, but she’s out. Then we have Justine Buman in the hurdles along with Lucy Metzger. We have a solid group that will really be able to help us.”
Another key senior is thrower Lauren Andersen, a returning state medal winner. “She placed 4th in the discus at state and has gotten much stronger. Coach Todd Bladt is our throws coach and he’s had nothing but good things to say about her so far in practice. Also Brooke Goshorn is another senior who is going to be up around that 115-120 foot range.”
The Cyclones start the season Thursday at Carroll. “The biggest thing we are going to be looking at is how much we’ve improved and how much stronger we have gotten since 2019. A lot of these girls, especially a lot of these seniors I had in cross country so I was able to see their progress in the fall, they’ve all been working very hard in the weight room and running on their own too. I’m excited to see what kind of improvement there will be right out of the gate.”
Coach Renkly says the girls are chomping at the bit to get things going. They’ll put some new meets on the schedule this year which will give them the opportunity to push themselves against new competition.
