(Atlantic) Atlantic Head Football Joe Brummer says he is ready to “hit the ground running” after the Atlantic Board of Education approved his contract on Wednesday.
“I’m looking forward to meeting with the players and setting up the summer weight and agility program, and building on the success we’ve had over the last couple of years,” said Coach Brummer.
Red Joe Brummer served as an assistant coach under Mike McDermott, who this past January announced his resignation, citing his need to spend more time with family.
Joe Brummer, a Harlan Community High School graduate, played on a state champion and state semifinal team and earned all-district and all-state honors. Brummer carried that success to the next level at Morningside College, where he was a four-year starter and a two-time all-American.
“I bring a lot of passion and enthusiasm to the game,” said Coach Brummer. “I love football, my players know that, and I think anyone who knows me understands that. I also feel it’s important to build relationships and I care about each one of them.”
Coach Brummer is familiar with the duties as he enters his third year as Head Baseball Coach. Another thing in Brummer’s favor is his familiarity with the program. He coached seventh-grade football when he was hired five years ago and spent four years on the varsity staff, most notably as the Offensive line coach. So when asked about his offensive philosophy, it should be of no surprise that his answer was, “we’re going to run the football.” Brummer lists the off-season weight and agility program as a top priority.
Atlantic Schools Superintendent Steve Barber says 17 individuals applied for the job. Athletic Director Andy Mitchell outlined the expectations he was looking for in the next football coach and involved three groups during the interview process. “Joe Brummer rose above everyone else during the interview process,” said Barber.
Coach Brummer welcomes back Defensive Coordinator Lee Saathoff and assistants Oran Perkins and Matt Mullenix. There are two remaining spots to be filled.
The school board also accepted the resignations of Ethan Pruisman, High School Vocal Music Teacher, and Heather Lundquist, Middle School Literacy Teacher & TLC Facilitator. The board also approved the contract for 4th-grade teacher Tori Dolch.
