(Harlan) Harlan boys track coach Sam Brummer says his team is excited for a chance to compete after missing out on a season last year.
The Cyclones won’t be particularly deep in numbers, but they’ve got some very capable performers. “We are just excited to compete. I think we have a good group. We don’t have a high number of kids compared to year’s past, but when you look at the kids we have, we have a lot of quality.”
Coach Brummer outlines his distance core. “Trey Gross would be at the forefront of that list. He’s had a lot of success in running long distance both in cross country and then track going back to his sophomore year. Then Reed Boardman and Brennon Munch and we have a couple of other young guys.”
They’ll have some standouts among their sprinters as well. “Michael Erlmeier is a leader for us, Mason Griffith, Aidan Hall, a lot of those guys lead the way in the sprint crew. We don’t have a lot of times to go off of, but we are excited to see what this group can do.”
In field events they are optimistic about Michael Erlmeier and Aidan Hall in the long jump. They lose some great throwers from a couple of years ago, but will have several prospects. “A combination of Will McLaughlin, Jameson Bieker, Hugh Griffith, Gunner Schmitz, and Matthew Sorfendon. They are all vying for some spots. We have a younger group there with a lot of juniors and sophomores.”
Brummer admits it’s hard to know what to expect from everyone this season. “That’ll kind of get shaken out when we go through meets. These early meets it’s going to be interesting to see the growth of our kids from the last time they were on a track. We’re excited for the opportunity.”
The Cyclones begin the season on Thursday, March 25th at Carroll. They also have a meet scheduled in Denison on March 30th.
