(Atlantic) District 4 Public Information Officer Trooper Shelby McCreedy says with nice weather, motorcyclists are anxious to get out, and a few are already out on the roadways.
Trooper McCreedy offers a few tips for motorists to watch out for with the drove of motorcycles taking to the road. She says it’s important for motorists to be aware of their surroundings.
McCreedy notes cell phones are illegal behind the wheel of a car, to begin with, more importantly, when motorcycles are on the road. She says distractions are a big factor in motorcycle crashes. The National Traffic Safety Association determined that passenger vehicles’ drivers are distracted more than half of the time.
Another important tip is for motorists to“drive sober and alert.” Trooper McCreedy says alcohol plays one of the biggest roles in motorcycle fatality accidents. Another way to avoid colliding with a motorcycle is to ask the passengers inside your vehicle to keep an eye out for motorcycles.
McCreedy says it’s also important to give motorcycles extra room and time. She notes motorcycles can break and change lanes quickly.
Trooper McCreedy says it’s a good idea to talk to young drivers about being aware of motorcycles because a young and inexperienced driver is not used to navigating around them.
McCreedy says slow down when traveling through intersections to allow some lead time to detect a motorcycle, don’t rely on a motorcycle’s turn signal, provide extra space when on wet pavement, and don’t blow grass clippings on the roadway.
Trooper McCreedy will provide safety tips for motorcycle operators in a news segment on Wednesday.
