(Atlantic) The adverse winter weather conditions are extending the school year in many western Iowa School Districts. Atlantic Schools Superintendent Steve Barber explores ways to make up the lost hours and bring the board the options on March 10.
“The last day of school was originally scheduled for May 19, and we will probably add a couple of days on the end, and still achieve our goal of getting kids out of school by Memorial Day,” said Barber. “We’ll probably cancel some teacher in-service days, and go full days instead of half days to make up some hours.”
\Barber has nothing but praise for Rich Hanson from Cass County secondary roads and Kirk Knudsen, Atlantic Street Superintendent, for all they do for the school district.
“Kirk and Rich do a great job,” said Barber. “The City crews are out at 4:00 a.m. during snow events pushing snow. They both do a great job here in Atlantic.”
Barber credits the bus department for all they do to get students to and from school safely and touts the propane-fueled bus fleet that could get through the sub-zero temperatures without a hitch. Additionally, Barber tipped his hat to the Atlantic Municipal Utilities for providing uninterrupted electrical service during last week’s sub-zero temperatures.
