(Guthrie Center) Three individuals have qualified for the state wrestling tournament for ACGC. Tegan Slaybaugh, Gunnar Larsen, and Cale Rowley all moved on as a district runner-up for the Chargers. Also advancing out of our immediate coverage area were Nodaway Valley’s Elliot Cooney and Audubon’s Cooper Nielsen.
Slaybaugh was the runner-up to Ogden’s Kolton Munson with a 7-0 loss in the finals. Prior to that the freshman beat Jacob Downey, of Logan-Magnolia, 11-6. Slaybaugh is 35-8 on the season. Larsen improved to 13-2 with a 1-1 day. He pinned Derek Gilbert (Westwood) in the semifinals and lost a 19-4 tech fall against Logan-Magnolia’s Hagen Heistand in the finals. Rowley moves on as the 152 pound runner-up with a 29-8 record. He pinned Kaden Broer (West Monona) in the semi’s and lost by fall to three time state finalist Briar Reisz, of Logan-Magnolia, in the finals.
Elliot Cooney, of Nodaway Valley, moves on as the 120 pound champion. He won by fall in 1:01 in his semifinal match and then won by injury default in the finals. It’s Cooney’s 3rd straight state tourney and he’s 42-5 on the season.
Audubon’s Cooper Nielsen won a wrestleback at 195 to qualify for his first state tourney. The sophomore is 34-17. He won by fall over Kale Pevestorf, of Coon Rapids-Bayard to punch his ticket. Nielsen’s first match was a loss by fall to eventual champ Brandon Mier, of Alta/Aurelia. He pinned Joe Hedger, of Logan-Magnolia, on the back side of the bracket to earn the wrestleback.
