(Griswold) Postseason time has arrived in Class 1A girls basketball. The Griswold Tigers will open up the regional tournament Thursday night against Fremont-Mills.
The Tigers are yet to reach their peak, especially on offense according to coach Chris Hamilton. “We haven’t played our best basketball yet this season and that’s kind of disappointing to say because I know what we are capable of and we are capable of being a really good team and making baskets and playing great defense. We’ve played a lot of games with great defense. We just haven’t seen the productivity on the offensive end yet and we are hoping maybe it will come together this week.”
They beat Essex 62-54 on Tuesday to finish the regular season at 5-14. Brenna Rossell scored 20 points. Coach Hamilton says the team is working and fighting as hard as they can. Thursday they’ll face a Fremont-Mills squad that beat them 30 points in each of their prior meetings. “We had a game on Monday and Tuesday and since there is not much time it allows us to not have to spend as much time scouting so that helps. However, Fremont-Mills really put it to us the last time we played. We definitely have our work cut out for us.”
Coach Hamilton says the team has cut down on turnovers, but their shooting hasn’t panned out in game situations. “They are a very strong team and play with a much higher pace. They’ve got a lot of different weapons. There’s three or four players you have to worry about scoring every possession. They are a well rounded team. It’s going to be a tough battle for sure.”
Depth has been a strength, especially benefitting the defense. Coach Hamilton says everyone relies on each other and trusts each other no matter who is in the game. He adds effort and intensity haven’t been issues at all this season.
The winner of Thursday’s game will play either Sidney or St. Albert on Tuesday.
