(Audubon) The Audubon boys basketball team has seen some big improvement from their 1-7 start. Cole Coleman Mullenix’s group has a winning record since the holiday break.
They are coming off of a very quality win on Tuesday when they beat IKM-Manning 38-33. “It definitely feels good to be able to sweep them. They are always a really well coached, disciplined team and they are hard to beat, because they aren’t going to beat themselves. In both games we defended well. The first game we played them we only gave up two points in the fourth quarter and then Tuesday they had 12 points in the second half so we defended well. To be honest, we shot the ball really well. I think we had eight 3’s in both games which is a lot for us.”
The team’s outside shooting has shown a lot of growth throughout the season. “We work on it every day. We spend a ton of time on skills every single practice. Our goal is always to develop better basketball players and develop that offensive skill set. I think we are coming around a little bit from where we were at the beginning of the season.”
The Wheelers prioritize team, effort, and defense in their program. “We really emphasize defense, we emphasize a good close out, we emphasize contesting every shot, we emphasize get on and off the ball well and good positioning constantly. We spend the first 30 minutes of every single practice we ever run working on defense. There’s a reason we do that first and it’s because I think it’s the most important. I want to build that culture of a team that buys into doing those thankless jobs.”
Audubon is a team that has relied on athleticism. “I really think our athleticism is seen in our ability to defend. We have to win low scoring game, but I think we make up for it in using our athleticism on the defensive end.”
Audubon is 7-11 overall.
