(Audubon) A fun non-conference matchup is lined up on KSOM Tuesday night if weather allows. CAM travels to Audubon and both of the girls teams have been playing well lately.
The Audubon girls have turned their season around. Since starting 2-5, they’ve beat everyone on their schedule except for Class 1A #5 Exira-EHK and 2A #11 Underwood. The Wheelers have given up an average of just 35 points per game in their last nine wins. “I’ve been extremely proud of our defense. We’ve played a very good team defense. Kodie Sporrer has done a tremendous job. We’ve been putting her on the opposing team’s best player and letting her be a nuisance to them and then I expect the other four players on the floor to help her out if she gets beat. We’ve really honed in on that.”
Audubon coach Darran Miller says strong rebounding has been another important factor. In fact, junior Jaci Christensen this week became Audubon’s all-time leading rebounder. “She does a good job of using her body well to box out…she goes and gets it with two hands and explodes up. When she’s determined go get it she’s going to get it. That’s what’s cool to see.”
Coach Miller speaks highly of CAM. “This year’s CAM team is just loaded, my goodness. They are young, they are tall, they are athletic. They kind of have everything a coach would dream of. It’s going to be a tough challenge for us. They have a lot of different athletes with their height and their speed so it’s going to be a big test for us.”
To better paint the picture of Audubon’s improvement, the Wheelers lost to both AHSTW and Treynor by ten before the break and topped each squad by three points in January. Against Logan-Magnolia they lost by nine in their first meet and won by 11 in the rematch.
Aleah Hermansen and Jaci Christensen have carried Audubon’s offense. Hermansen posts 15.2 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 2.9 steals per game. Christensen contributes 15.2 points and 11.7 rebounds per game. Pregame coverage for CAM/Audubon hits the air at 5:45 p.m. with a 6:00 tip.
