(Atlantic) Three players scored in double figures to lead Clarinda past Atlantic 56-44 in a Hawkeye Ten Conference boys’ basketball game at Atlantic on Tuesday night.
The Cardinals 6’5 junior post player Grant Jobe led the way with 18-points, Michael Shull and Wyatt Schmitt each scored 12 points, and Drew Brown pitched in 9 points.
Skyler Handlos led Atlantic with 16-points Dayton Templeton, 13, and Grant Sturm finished with 9 points.
Atlantic led 13-11 at the quarter, but the Cardinals took control of the tempo and outscored the home team 14-8 in the second quarter, 13-11 in the third frame, and 18-12 in the final period to seal the win.
“Clarinda was efficient offensively all night,” said Atlantic Head Coach Jeff Ebling.“We had some chances on the inside; we couldn’t get the shots to fall. Clarinda cashed in on several easy buckets around the rim, and we didn’t do a good job of protecting it.
“We have to get more physical, and we’ll work on that over the next couple of days because this Friday night, Harlan comes to town, and they play physical,” said Ebling.”It’s not like they’re not trying; for some reason, the ball wouldn’t go in the basket. I thought Garrett Reynolds had some nice moves inside, but the ball would hit the rim and fall off.”
The Trojans narrowed a double-digit deficit to four points midway through the fourth quarter. However, Cooper Neal hit a big three, and Jobe scored two high percentage inside shots and made three-of-four free-throws to help stave off a Trojan rally at the end.
Clarinda extends their record to 7-5 on the season and 3-5 in conference games. Atlantic falls to 3-5 and 2-2 in the Hawkeye Ten Conference standings.
