(Denison) Iowa traffic fatalities are comparable with 2019 but higher than in 2018.
In 2020, 335 people died on Iowa Roadways, compared to 336 in 2019 and 319 in 2018.
McCreedy says traffic fatalities were 30 deaths below the four-year average through May and June, largely due to the reduced traffic caused by the Coronavirus pandemic. Unfortunately, once traffic picked up, July and August proved to be the deadliest months in 2020, with 44 fatalities in July and 52 in August.
Trooper McCreedy says speed was the contributing factor to the higher than normal fatality rate.
McCreedy says in 2020, triple-digit speed citations were up 108-percent compared to the past four years. Speeding tickets for 25-miles per hour over the posted speed limit were up 74-percent, and Troopers wrote 4,050 citations, compared to a four-year average of 2,331,…almost double.
Again, that’s Iowa State Patrol Trooper and Public Information Officer Shelby McCreedy.
