(Guthrie Center) ACGC will get back to the competition slate January 5th when they host Interstate-35. The young Chargers are coming of age.
ACGC’s last outing was a 52-31 victory over West Central Valley. Coach Brad Baudler says the team’s offense came out slow, but defense led the way. “We held them to just 15 points in the first half and went into the break up three. We came out right away and got some offensive rebounds and steals. We finally converted on them and got up by 10-15 and from then on we got up to 20 and kept our lead. The big thing that helped us was our bench.”
Mersadez Richter was a big part of the bench production with 12 points. Saige O’Brien and Reagan Carney played good defense when starters were in foul trouble, according to coach Baudler. Other youngsters that have seen a lot of playing time include Taylor Carlson and Sophie Dorsey. The team is 4-3 even though they have just three upperclassmen that have seen regular minutes. “We could’ve played a little better. I feel like a couple of our losses we could’ve won or made it a closer game. I wouldn’t say I’m completely happy, but I’m glad we came out with a win right before break to give us some confidence. We can shoot better. We are coming out slow. If we don’t come out slow in games we probably win quite a few.”
With some extra practice opportunities during break, Baudler wants to see the team improve their shooting and tie up some loose ends. “Our three-point percentage isn’t nearly as good as I know we are capable of. It’s a matter of repetition and then we need to solidify anything that we didn’t do right in our last few games.”
EmmaKay McClain, Kylie Young, and Alaina Bunde are the team’s most experienced players. Young is the team’s leading scorer at 14.4 points per game. McClain and Bunde each average 11 points.
