(Elk Horn) Tyler Petersen’s season high 24 points highlighted Exira-EHK’s 62-56 win over Ar-We-Va in their final game before break.
The Spartans hit the holidays with a record of 5-2. Petersen hit a few three’s and made 7/8 free-throws in the overtime victory. Head coach Doug Newton says his team battled from behind to get the win. “Most of the second half we were down from 7-8 most of the time and ten even a couple of times. We made a couple of plays and got it back. We chipped away and with about five seconds left had a long pass from Tyler Petersen to Trey Petersen who laid it in at the buzzer to force overtime. We got the lead in overtime and salted it away at the free-throw line.”
Freshman Cash Emgarten also had a season high in the Ar-We-Va win with 15 points on five 3-pointers. Emgarten is one of several newcomers that have stepped up early on this season. “Not only him, but Jackson Radcliff and Aiden Flathers and in the first half Aiden Potts did a nice job and he’s a first year starter. Those guys have had to grow up quick and help out.”
Between now and their January 5th outing with CAM they have some things they want to work on. “We have a few things to clean up. We’ll get some guys in some different spots and hopefully they know the plays a little better and we’ll be a little more efficient after Christmas. All in all I’m pretty happy with the way the first third of the season finished up. To be 5-2 at this point, we’ll take that. That’s pretty good.”
Easton Nelson has been a big bright spot statistically with averages of 19 points and 7.8 rebounds per game while shooting 68.2% from the field. Tyler Petersen and Trey Petersen have each consistently scored in double figures.
