Charles Richard “Dick” Gibson, 88, son of Harry & Roma (Howick) Gibson, was born November 12, 1932 near Bagley, Iowa. He passed away Sunday, December 27, 2020 at his home in Linden.
Dick graduated from Linden High School in 1950. He married Jean Spillers on May 15, 1953 at the Presbyterian Church in Guthrie Center. Dick was serving in the United States Coast Guard, so they made their home in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. From there they went to Bermuda where Dick served for two years. Following four years of service in the Coast Guard, Dick and Jean moved to Newton where Dick was working as a clerk for the Rock Island Railroad. He then became a Train Dispatcher and they moved to East Moline, IL and then to Bettendorf, IA from 1959 to 1966. They moved to Clive until 1974 when they moved to the family farm in Dallas County near Linden. Dick retired from the railroad after 40 years of service. They lived on the farm until 2 ½ years ago when they moved into Linden.
Dick loved everyone and never met a stranger. He enjoyed square dancing, going to the casino, bingo, cribbage, catfishing, hunting, and camping. He loved watching his beloved Cubs and attending all his grandchildren’s events. Dick and Jean were also foster parents for 59 infants and 10 older children.
Dick was a member of the Linden United Methodist Church, 50 year Masonic Lodge member, and 28 year member of the Eastern Star.
Dick is survived by his wife, Jean of Linden; children, Linda (Mark) McQuistan of Winter Garden, FL; Douglas (Julie) Gibson of Newton; Luann “Dee” (Randy) Olson of Linden; Dennis (Darla) Gibson of Adel; special foster daughter Mary Anne Killin; 9 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren with 2 more on the way. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Joyce Goodrich.
Services will be 10:30 A.M., Monday, January 4, 2021 at the Twigg Funeral Home, Panora. Burial will be in the West Linn Cemetery, near Linden. Visitation will be Sunday, January 3, 2021 from 2-4 P.M. at the funeral home. Attendees are ask to please wear a mask during your time inside the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers memorials may made to UnityPoint Hospice, Jefferson or to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
