(Elk Horn) Exira-EHK is allowing just 32.6 points per game in their five game win streak to start the year. The Spartans checked in at #7 in Class 1A in the latest IGHSAU poll.
Coach Tom Petersen says sharing the ball has been a big plus for his squad this year. “We’ve been sharing the ball pretty well. I think we’ve had four or five girls in double digits in every single game. To me that’s just a tribute to the girls sharing the ball.”
Macy Emgarten scored 25 to lead the way in Exira-EHK’s last win, a 65-27 decision over IKM-Manning on Monday. Coach Petersen was pleased with the way his team played defense, especially on the Wolves leading scorer Alexa Ahrenholtz. “We came out and ran a diamond and one/box and one. I had Shay Burmeister on Ahrenholtz quite a bit and our girls did a pretty good job with communication. Some of our rotations were pretty decent.”
Exira-EHK features an experienced starting five of Emgarten, Burmeister, Mollie Rasmussen, Quinn Grubbs, and Tatum Grubbs. They’ve managed to get off to such a successful start despite a very thin roster. Only eight players are listed on the roster. Coach Petersen says Hannah Nelson and Alisa Partridge have been important factors into the team’s success with the roles they fill off the bench.
The Spartans will play West Harrison on Friday, Kuemper Catholic on Monday, and Ar-We-Va Tuesday before reaching the Holiday Break.
