(Griswold) Iowa House Representative Tom Moore will serve as the Vice-Chair of the House Environmental Protection Committee during the 89th General Assembly. A committee Moore has occupied a seat at the table in all five years as a state legislator.
Moore says the re-appointment to this committee gives him a good forum to make changes in the bottle bill. Moore says the number of redemption centers in the state dropped from 213 just a few years ago to 117. The Griswold Republican says the redemption centers need more for what they’re doing. “It’s not economically feasible to run these redemptions centers at the current penny rate, and we need to make some changes, ” said Moore. “This committee assignment will allow me to get something done here.”
According to the Consumer Recycling Institute, in Iowa and nine other bottle-bill states, more than twice as many containers are recycled per capita than in states without them. Based on 2016 numbers, the organization has estimated that only 7% of all deposit beverage containers recycled in Iowa are from curbside recycling, while as much as 93% are those redeemed for the nickel-a-container deposit.
