Marjorie Elizabeth Gubbels, daughter of Leo and Hilda (Leuschen) Fahn, was born June 11, 1932 on the family farm in Lincoln Township, Shelby County, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Panama, Iowa. She attended Lincoln Township #3 Country School then St. Mary’s Catholic School in Panama graduating in 1950.
On October 1, 1953, Marge was united in marriage to Nicholas Gubbels at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Panama. To this union six children were born: Phil, Dean, Mary Lou, Gary, Susan, and Joe. Along with raising her own family, she also helped others in their homes after babies were born. Growing up during the depression, Marge learned conservatism and how everything had a purpose. In her earlier years she worked with Nickie helping on the farm.
Marge was a great seamstress and enjoyed sewing for her family and later in life became an avid quilter. She had a large garden and strawberry patch which helped provide food for her growing family. Marge was a social butterfly which led to her involvement in the Panama Community Chorus, Panama Variety Show, and Sewing Circle. She was a member of the Altar Society and served as communion minister. She entertained herself for years with ceramics, china painting and working at Betty’s Ceramics and Stichin’ Tree Quilts. Nick and her loved to dance and enjoyed annual trips to Branson, Missouri, and Minnesota.
Aging resulted in her move to Assisted Living, which was difficult, missing getting out. She still enjoyed visitors but was recently limited to window visits due to the pandemic.
Marge died on Thursday, December 3, 2020 surrounded by her children at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, attaining the age of eighty-eight years, five months and twenty-two days. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Nick and son Gary, brother Joe (Marilyn) Fahn, brothers-in-law Chuck Reynolds and Kenny Escher.
