(Anita) Tuesday night on KSOM CAM gets their 2020-21 girls basketball season started by taking on AHSTW.
Cougar coach Joe Wollum is encouraged by what he’s seen from his team so far. “Pleasantly surprised. We’ve had some freshman really step up and contribute right away in practice. Our returners have done a great job. They’ve blended together well and we’re excited to get this thing rolling.”
For the first time in over a decade Wollum heads into basketball season without having coached football all fall. “It gave me some time to really focus on basketball. That’s been a definite change. We are going to be able to do some more things because I’ve had a little more freedom. Coach (Brian) Fogleman is in the same boat with me not coaching football anymore. We’ve had the freedom to get together and do a little bit more basketball stuff. I think that’s really going to help us and help our team.”
AHSTW is ranked 6th in the Class 2A preseason rankings. The defending Western Iowa Conference champs are coming off of a 20 win season. “They have a lot of pieces back from a team that reached the regional finals a year ago. They are going to be a great challenge for us right away. We are going to really find out what we are made of on opening night. The Jones girls (Kailey) down in the post can really dominate games and gave us some fits last year. The Claire’s (Harris and Denning) out there playing guards. They are dangerous as well.”
CAM won 16 games last year and graduated some key seniors, but the incoming talent they have in the freshman class along with the development of the returning players has the Cougars bullish with their expectations coming into the season.
