(Atlantic) Atlantic Activities Director Andy Mitchell late last week presented further clarifications from the Governor’s latest proclamation dealing with spectators at extra-curricular activities.
“The most important thing to remember is we have to be flexible,” said Mitchell. “This is about allowing our students a chance to participate in extra-curricular activities. I think if we keep that in the back of our minds, it will help us get through this.”
Governor Reynolds announced one week ago that only two people per player or those involved in the arts such as musicals etc. are allowed inside the facility during that particular event.
The Hawkeye Ten Conference Athletic Directors reached out to the Governor’s Office last week for further clarification. Mitchell says what they found out is this does not include managers, this does not include cheerleaders, this does not include members of the pep band or the dance team. This only for the players on the court or mat. “This is not how we want to handle this because a lot of us have gyms big enough to handle more people, but at the same time, this is what is coming from the Governor’s Office, and that is what we’re going to follow.”
Mitchell says the vouchers are only good for that particular game unless a player is suited up for both J.V. and varsity, and the two fans can only be present at that particular event. “This is going to be a nightmare,” said Mitchell. “But, we will come up with a plan, and we will execute it. We want everyone to remember; this is about giving the kids a chance to play.”
The additional mitigation measure is an effort to help stop the spread of a surging number of positive cases of COVID-19 popping up across the state.
