(Forest City) Former Exira-EHK football star Drew Buckholdt will lace up the cleats one final time this weekend. Buckholdt is a senior for Waldorf and the Warriors close out their season Saturday against Dakota State.
It’s been a winding road for the big hitting linebacker. His college career began with baseball, but he’s since found his way to Waldorf and onto the football field. “I’m so glad. I’ve said before it’s the best decision I’ve ever made switching to football. I don’t even know why I started out in baseball looking back at it. I just couldn’t be more thankful.”
With his career winding down Buckholdt has done his best to soak it all in this season. “It’s been going good. I just love being around the team. It’s my last year so I’m trying to make the most of it in this unique year. Obviously because of COVID it’s brought challenges. We couldn’t do as many team bonding activities as we would have like to, but it’s been a fun year for me.”
With 74 tackles on the season Buckholdt is far and away the statistical leader of the defense. “Coach always says to be fast, physical, and aggressive so just fly around and make plays and do assignment football.”
Buckholdt calls it a surreal feeling to be heading into his final game.
