(Atlantic) Two candidates are running for the District 5 Cass County Board of Supervisor seat, left open after Frank Waters decided not to seek re-election.
Republican Bernard Pettinger earned a spot in the General Election by defeating Linda Rieneke in the Primary. Democratic Candidate Russell Joyce ran uncontested.
Joyce, former CADCO Director, and County Supervisor says he brings a lot of experience to the table. He is a life-long Cass County resident and fourth-generation farmer. His public service career started as a township trustee, served on the Cass County Extension Council, spent time as an assistant Soil Commissioner, and followed by two-terms on the Board of Supervisors, before taking over the job as CADCO Director. He retired from that position in 2018.
Joyce says he’s been involved in many different things over the years, but he is always willing to learn.
Pettinger is no stranger to leadership roles. The rural Anita man served on the Hospital Board, Secretary of the Co-op, a former School Board President, former Fair Board President, and served on the Extension Council.
Pettinger is running on a fiscal responsibility platform. He sees his role as a supervisor to listen to the people first before making a decision.
The other contested race in Cass County is for the Ag Extension Council where five candidates are running for the four seats. Those running are; Darrin Petty, Marcy Jo Dorsey, Curt Rush, Jody Steffen, and Alice C. Williams.
The uncontested races in the county include; County Auditor, Republican Dale Sunderman, Republican County Sheriff Darby McLaren, Republican County Attorney, Vanessa Strazdas, Supervisor District 1 Supervisor Stephen S. Green, and Supervisor District 4 candidate, Steven Baier.
Three people are running for four seats on the Hospital Board of Trustees; Linda L. Pelzer, Leanne Pellett, and Ned Brown.
Three candidates are running for three seats on the Soil and Water Conservation District; Ray Wilson, Curt Behrends, and Chase Wheatley.
The polls open at 7:00 a.m. and close at 9:00 p.m.
