(Oakland) For the first time in his career, Riverside senior Ben Schroder is a state cross country qualifier. The Class 1A boys competition is slated for 4:00 p.m. Saturday.
Schroder says qualifying felt great and it had been a goal ever since his freshman year. Last season he was close, but didn’t make it and that drove him to this point. “It’s been in the back of my head all season and all winter training. I didn’t want that to happen again so this year I made it happen.”
He’s excited for his first opportunity to run in Fort Dodge. “I’ve watched it live streamed, but this year I’ll be able to go up there and race. It’ll be a fun race, fast race, competition all around me and it will feel great.”
Schroder advanced with a 9th place finish last Friday at the Audubon state qualifying meet. He spoke with KSOM sports following the race in Audubon.
