(Stanton) Stanton improved to 23-4 on the season with their sweep of CAM in a Class 1A Regional Volleyball Quarterfinal Wednesday evening. The Viqueens rarely trailed during their 25-13, 25-14, 25-7 victory.
An early 6-0 stretch in the first set put the home team in front. CAM managed to tie things twice– at 7-7 and 13-13– but Stanton accelerated to the finish with a dozen straight point to grab a 1-0 lead in the match. The strong close to the first set was highlighted by a quality stretch of serving from Nicole Vorhies. Tara Peterson reach doubled digit kills on the night and the opening set was her loudest of the evening.
Stanton opened up a tight second set with a 5-0 stretch to lead 12-7 and took control from their. Jenna Stephens got on track at the net and the Cougars struggled to slow down the 6’0 sophomore. CAM hung around for a while it set two, being within 14-11 at one time, but Stanton took over down the stretch to extend the margin to double figures.
The home kept the hammer down in third. They scored the first 12 points of the final set and that was that. They rolled to a 25-7 win to earn the sweep. Marleigh Johnson exhibited a strong all-around game especially in the 3rd for Stanton. They move on to face Grand View Christian in a regional semifinal on Monday night.
Rolling Valley Conference champ CAM bows out at 22-6. Zoey Baylor and Mallory Behnken each had three kills. Taylor Bower led the team in assists with 11 and Marissa Spieker led the team in digs with 8.
