(Guthrie Center) ACGC takes a 3-4 record into their first round playoff matchup at 5-2 Pleasantville on Friday.
The Chargers are getting back closer to full strength and head in on the heels of a 50-0 triumph against West Central Valley in Week 7. The Trojans sprinted out to a 5-0 start before losing back to back games against Pella Christian and Interstate-35. ACGC coach Cody Matthewson says Pleasantville has some big bodies. “Size isn’t always everything. I’ve seen some kids that look like Tarzan and play like Jane, but I’ve seen some kids that are 5’9″ and 125 pounds and they bring it when they hit and are just as physical as a 6’5″ 320 pound man so I don’t put a lot of stock into size. They have some guys that move pretty well on the offensive line so we have to be ready to be physical. It’s win or go home and that’s the way we have to treat that game.”
Both teams love to run the football. “Pleasantville is the #3 rushing team in Class 1A and we are the #5 rushing team in Class 1A so obviously it’s a game that will be over by 8:00.”
Gavin Cornelison ran for a single game school record 303 yards against West Central Valley in Week 6. “He ran hard. He does a great job. The kid is a workhorse. I’m really proud of him and proud of our offensive line. I’m proud of everybody that helped him achieve that…Everybody played a part in his success.”
The Chargers have yet to face many teams with a heavy dose of rushing like they’ll see from Pleasantville, but Matthewson feels the strength of their defense is against run.
