(Atlantic) The Atlantic Varsity Football team steps onto the newly renovated Trojan Bowl for the first time on Friday night. The Trojans have logged a lot of miles on the road over the past six weeks, but despite the full slate of away games, they’ve managed to compile a 5-1 record, including five straight wins and three straight shut outs.
The Trojans clinched the District 9 title last week with the win over Shenandoah, regardless of the outcome on Friday night. As I reflect on some of the pre-season conversations with Atlantic Head Coach Mike McDermott, he never talked about district titles. His goal was for this team to improve every week.
The twenty seniors on the Trojan roster have a lot to do with the team’s success up to this point, and success is nothing new for these seniors. Before returning to the varsity level, Coach McDermott coached these guys when they went 6-0 in the 7th grade.
While most of the 20 seniors garner most of the playing time, Coach McDermott passes a lot of credit to the scout team players.
On the flip side, the veteran Trojans face a Red Oak squad with a roster full of freshman and sophomores.
McDermott, the Tigers offense, centers around Riley Fouts, who leads the team in rushing with 68-carries for 305 yards and three touchdowns.
This is a big night for Atlantic in a lot of ways. It’s a homecoming in the sense of the word and the first night in the new stadium.
The Trojans have outscored the opposition 63-0 over the last three games and, during the five consecutive wins, have outscored the opposition 125-28.
The game starts at 7:00. We will have the broadcast on 95.7 F.M. and KS957.com. The pre-game starts at 6:00 p.m.
