(Guthrie Center) ACGC cross country has been performing well and looks for even better things to come. The Chargers will be in action Thursday at West Central Valley.
ACGC’s boys and girls teams are coming off of wins at their home meet last week. The Charger boys posted a perfect score of 15 points. Coach Colin Shawgo says, “I’m extremely proud. They’ve been putting in a lot of work throughout the summer and during the season. We run this course quite a bit especially once we found out we’ll be hosting a state qualifying meet we’ve been practicing it pretty religiously. I’m not surprised one bit that they came out there and were able to do that.”
Coach Shawgo says the most impressive part was how well the boys and girls runners moved up in the 2nd half of the race. “We really moved well in the 2nd half of the race, which was kind of our strategy going in. To see them execute it so well and to pass a lot of people to secure those victories was really cool. A huge shout out to the boys team. The last mile we really kicked it in to secure those positions.”
The girls team won their home meet, but knows they are just scratching the surface of what they can accomplish. “They had a great race. What’s scary about our girls team is we still have not had a full lineup. We haven’t had everybody run their best race at the same time. We are still going out and really kicking butt. If we can get everybody healthy and going to their potential in one race I think we are going to shock a lot of people and they are going to see a team that could win a trophy at the state meet.”
They’ll get to measure up with one of the best teams in their conference at West Central Valley later this week. A team they have their eye on is Panorama. “The big one for the girls is Panorama. Always they are one of our biggest rivals. They have a really good season going. I think they are going to be a top three team in 2A so going against them on a regular basis is really good for our girls. It gives us a good measuring stick to see how much we’ve progressed.”
For the boys it’ll be IKM-Manning and Missouri Valley as teams to contend with.
