(Griswold) In a Week 5 matchup of two teams looking for their first win it was East Union topping Griswold 18-12. The Eagles scored an 8-yard run from Kael Seales with 2:18 remaining and then got an interception from Scott Driskill to put the game away.
Neither team ever led by more than six points all night. Griswold recovered a fumble in the end zone for their first score of the game. Sam Olson carried the football down to the one yard line and the ball was knocked free, but Colton Turner recovered and the Tigers led 6-0.
East Union responded quickly. In fact, it took the Eagles less than two minutes to tie the game at six. Gus McNeill evened the contest with his one yard QB sneak. The visitors captured their first lead thanks to a drive that spanned 9:00 to start the 2nd half. They converted multiple fourth downs on the possession including a 10 yard TD pass from McNeill to Seales with 2:58 left in the third.
Griswold battled back to tie the game at 12 with 11:09 to play. Lane Mueller carried in from four yards on 4th and goal. Each team had opportunities at big momentum plays down the stretch, but it was East Union that eventually grabbed the bull by the horns. The Eagles moved the ball effectively on the ground late in the 4th with Emmet Long who carried for 175 yards on the night. Seales emerged as another option on the ground in the 2nd half as all eight of his carries came after the break. He tallied 23 yards on 7 carries and took the ball into the end zone for the go ahead score.
Griswold coach after the game commented, “Hard fought defensively. I’m proud of the way we played defensively. Just too many mistakes. Fumbles, bad snaps, drive killers. We have to work on that. I’m proud of the guys and how hard they played on both sides of the ball. We just have to finish next time.” He points out some of the defensive standouts. “Sam Olson it seemed like he was everywhere on the field at the defensive end spot and sometimes middle linebacker. Our outside backers Cale Swain and Colton Turner did a great job of setting the edge. That’s something we can build off of.”
The Eagles are 1-3 heading into a contest with East Mills next Friday night. Griswold collides with Bedford in Week 6. Sam Olson carried for over 100 yards on 17 carries. Cale Swain had 46 rushing yards. Lane Mueller completed three passes for 98 yards. Two of the receptions were grabbed by Swain for 71 yards while Levi Rainey caught a 27 yard pass. Rainey also intercepted a pass early in the game.
