(Harlan) Homecoming is a tradition of welcoming back former students, and many schools across the state are celebrating homecoming over the next several weeks. However, some of the old traditions have been altered in various school districts because of COVID-19.
Harlan is celebrating homecoming this week. Harlan Schools Superintendent Lynn Johnson says unfortunately the district is celebrating with a few changes due to the virus and social distancing guidelines. “We’ve had to look at changing some of our traditional Homecoming activities, and we’ve added some new ones as well,” explained Johnson.
For example; the Powder Puff football game, vollerama, and dance are off the schedule. Johnson says the goal is to reschedule these activities for later in the year.
“Monday night we had our first ever bags tournament with 38-teams competing,” said Johnson. “We continued the tradition of dress-up days throughout the week. The coronation will be in the auditorium on Friday, however, we will have limited attendance.”
Johnson says FMTC and HMU will be live streaming the coronation. “The good news is, those who can’t attend should be able to watch the ceremony from their homes,” said Johnson. “And the students will be watching the festivities on a video screen in their classrooms.”
The Homecoming Queen candidates are; Jocelyn Cheek, Ashley Hall, Kylie Albertsen, Kennedy Kjergaard, and Justine Buman. The King candidates are Trey Gross, Wyatt Muenchrath, Isaiah Ahrenholtz, Jacob Schechinger, and Jordan Schechinger.
