(Greenfield) The Nodaway Valley Cross Country runners will be in action Tuesday when they head to Winterset.
This will be the Wolverine’s second competition of the season. Last Thursday at West Central Valley marked the first time out and the girls performed especially well with a team title. Sophia Broers placed 2nd, Abby Engles 9th, Lily Day 10th, and Erin Ford 11th. Coach Darrell Burmeister says when it’s time to compete, they are ready. “They like meets. They always step up for the meets. Most of them are pretty good practice players too. They ran a lot this summer. We thought the Panorama girls were going to be there and we’d battle with them, but they weren’t there. Audubon put three in the top ten and it wasn’t looking good for us, but then our girls came in a pack.”
The boys team finished second at West Central Valley last week. They were just two points behind Kuemper Catholic/Carroll. Toby Bower won the race, Ben Breheny was runner-up, and Doug Berg took fourth. Malachi Broers added a 14th place finish to earn a medal. “We have a lot of new guys so we are really happy. We almost pulled it off. Kuemper Catholic is with Carroll, they have only one cross country team there. We wanted to win it obviously. We wanted to go 1-2-3 in the boys. We almost did, Doug tried and wasn’t quite there. The Carroll/Kuemper kid had run in the high 16’s last year at state.”
Bower’s win was a payoff of a lot of offseason training. Coach Burmeister says he put in 600 miles during the summer. At Winterset there will be know team scoring kept and medals will be determined by what grade each runner is in.
