(Audubon) Audubon hosts Exira-EHK in Week 1 of the high school football season on Friday night. We’ll have the game on KSOM.
Coach Sean Birks says the biggest challenge out there when it comes to preparing for this week is not having any film on the opponent. Add to that the fact that offseason workouts were delayed until July 1st. “Part of me feels like we are still scrambling. Everybody else is probably in that same boat. We could use any two, three, four weeks, to get some stuff done, but we don’t get that. It’s a matter of getting as close to ready and a finished product and then making adjustments on the fly.”
Audubon’s biggest hits to graduation came on the line where standouts Luke Mosinski, Tanner Petersen, and Eric Hermansen all have to be replaced. “That’s obviously the #1 question. We talked about it in the offseason that we had a chance to be deep up there, but we are still trying to figure out which three can be counted on the most.”
Joey Schramm, Alex Foran, Jordan Schrader, Peyton Meaike, Cooper Nielsen, and Gavin Larsen are all competing for playing time on the offensive line. Garrett Christensen and Carson Bauer are two guys in line for more action on the defensive line.
While the team will technically be breaking in a first year starter at quarterback with Gavin Smith, it’s a signal-caller with a lot of varsity reps. “He’s one of those kids that you’re fortunate to get. Most teams handing off to a first year quarterback don’t get that luxury. He played a little bit as a freshman, a little bit more as a sophomore and he’s ready to take it now.”
Audubon has just two seniors and they are two really good ones with Ethan Klocke and Joel Klocke. “They have productive conversations with their teammates at practice and each other. We are really lucky to have them. I’m excited see now that they’ve had another year to get bigger, faster, and stronger.”
Our In the Huddle programs kicks off our coverage right after the 5:00 news. We’ll have the kickoff between Audubon and Exira-EHK at 7:00 Friday night.
