(Harlan) Prairie Rose State Park in Shelby County was the recipient of a walleye stocking last week.
Prairie Rose benefited from a surplus in the DNR’s hatchery system. Fisheries Biologist Bryan Hayes was pleasantly surprised that some were available for a smaller body of water such as Prairie Rose. “Anglers are pretty excited about walleyes and the prospect of having them in these lakes. As a policy the state of Iowa doesn’t stock lakes under 500 acres because of the number we are able to raise and because they tend to do better in larger lakes. The inventory we have goes to those lakes greater than 500 acres. Places like Icaria, Twelve Mile, and Three Mile.”
The Friends of Lake Anita helped supply Lake Anita with a stocking program in the spring and Viking Lake has a nursery pond set up adjacent to the lake with walleye fry being grown to two inches before being flushed into the lake.
