(Anita) CAM softball has won five of their last six games. The team’s only losses since the first week of the season have been to a very good Grand View Christian squad. Their setbacks early in the year were against quality foes East Union and West Harrison.
The Cougars take an 8-4 record into a matchup with Orient-Macksburg tonight and then will get a shot at unbeaten Exira-EHK on Wednesday. We’ll have the CAM vs Exira-EHK matchup on KSOM. Coach Larry Hunt is excited for the opportunity, “You’re always excited to see someone like that. Exira-EHK is playing extremely well right now, but I think with some of the team’s we’ve seen like Grand View Christian and East Union and Riverside those teams are going to prepare us to have a chance to go in and play with them and knock them off I hope.”
CAM lit up the scoreboard early in the season with 18 runs apiece in their first two outings. Coach Hunt says his team has been aggressive at the plate. “We’ve been playing pretty good ball. We’ve been putting the ball in play. Top to bottom 1-9 we’ve been swinging the bats pretty well.” Grace Kauffman sports a .595 batting average and Marissa Spieker is hitting .424. Maddy McKee, Maddy Holtz, and Allison Spieker are all above .300 and Allison Spieker has connected on two home runs.
Helen Riker is in her third year as a starting pitcher and has seen some improvement. “Her pitches are working real well right now. She’s working on hitting spots and if we do that we are in pretty good shape.” Riker has a 7-2 record with a 2.66 ERA.
