(Atlantic) In 2017, the Iowa legislature passed a bill allowing the sale and consumer use of fireworks.
The City of Atlantic ordinance states fireworks can be discharged within City limits from noon to 11:00 p.m. on July 2, 3, and 4th. Consumers can ignite fireworks on private property. The ordinance bans people visibly intoxicated or under the influence of narcotics from setting off fireworks. Anyone releasing these devices is responsible for its operation, flight, and consequences.
Atlantic Mayor Dave Jones asks residents to be safe and courteous and clean up the mess. “Fireworks are fun to have, but be courteous to your neighbors,” said Mayor Jones. “Use a solid base to shoot off the bigger stuff because if they tip over, a lot of power could go towards your house or your neighbor’s home.
The ordinance also states no person under the age of 18 shall discharge DOT 1.4 class fireworks without adult supervision. The law bans the discharge of fireworks within 300 feet of a hospital or long term care facility. Consumers must follow the directions on the package, and sky lanterns without a tether rope are strictly prohibited.
The Cities annual fireworks display will be held on Friday, July 3, at the Atlantic Little League complex.
