(Avoca) AHSTW now owns wins over the top two softball teams in the Western Iowa Conference. The Lady Vikes notched a 9-3 victory over Underwood on Tuesday evening. They improve to 6-7 on the year, the Eagles slip to 9-2. AHSTW also has a win over league champ Riverside in a weekend tournament.
The winning formula on Tuesday night included ten hits and six walks. Ally Meyers went 3/3. Her big shot was two run double in the 4th inning. She also walked once and scored one run. Her RBI double came in a frame that saw AHSTW send 11 batters to the plate and score six runs. They extended the lead from 3-1 to 9-1 at that point. Four of the first five batters in the 4th reached safely including three on walks and one on an error. Madison Heiny walked with the bases loaded to bring in a run. Madison Thronton and Natalie Hagadon followed with RBI hits setting the stage for the Meyers double.
Kailey Jones had a solid night at the dish as well with two hits including a two run single with two outs to cash in on a scoring opportunity in the 2nd inning. Thornton and Hagadon each had a pair of singles.
Thornton pitched the win and worked her way around trouble more often than not. Underwood had three hits in the first inning, but didn’t get a run thanks largely to Paige Osweiler throwing out a runner attempting to steal second. Thornton worked around three walks in the 3rd inning. Two big catches by Jones in left field helped ASHTW hold Underwood to just one run. The Eagles tallied nine hits in the contest. Maddie Pierce and Allie Robertson both had multi-hit games.
