(Audubon) A pair of Audubon seniors are giving baseball another shot after several years away from the sport.
After having their opportunity at spring sports erased due to the pandemic, both Eric Hermansen and Luke Mosinski wanted compete and spend time with friends. For Hermansen there wasn’t much hesitation to return to the diamond. “I played all the way from T-Ball all the way to JV my 8th grade year. We didn’t get golf this year and I was really looking forward to one more sport with my classmates. I missed baseball so I thought I’d give it another shot.”
Hermansen notes Jackson Jensen was one teammate that was really in his ear about coming out again. He’s glad he did. “Honestly I like the practices. I enjoyed pitching against Riverside.” He admits he wasn’t sure what to expect. “I wasn’t really sure because I haven’t thrown a ball. I didn’t know if I’d improved, but it’s a really fun time.”
Hermansen is 1/3 at the plate this season with two RBI. He started one game at DH and has pitched two scoreless innings.
Mosinski, in his lone pinch hit opportunity so far, drew a bases loaded walk to bring in a run. “I was talking to a few of my friends like Jackson (Jensen), Skyler (Schultes), and Marcus (Olsen). We didn’t have track or that last month of school to kind of say bye. This is kind of a way to do this. I don’t regret it at all, this is a good way to hang out with the guys some more.”
He says it was Hermansen that gave the best sales pitch. “He decided he wanted to go out and give it a try and said just go out, it’s shortened season, and just keep going.”
The Wheelers faced a rigorous schedule the first week and produced a 2-3 record. They’ll be in action Monday against Missouri Valley.
