(Lewis) Hilltop Creations will begin hosting a Farmer’s Market with fresh local produce in Lewis beginning on Tuesday, June 9th.
Chris Jahnke, owner of 3HO in Lewis, said Hilltop Creations had been a part of Produce in the Park ever since the start and they decided this year they would go out on their own. Jahnke said they started this garden when he was with Cass Incorporated before they disbanded.
“The gals and guys we work with, that we were teaching how to garden, loved it so much and were heartbroken that Cass was going to quit doing it and so Mike Waters and I decided we would put this together and continue to do it,” explained Jahnke. “Basically, we have a bunch of girls that have some type of disability that just love to garden and so we kept this going and we made them owners of this garden. They take great pride in it. They learned how to count money, they learned customer service and everything to do with a garden, they make the decisions, they create the flyers, they made the decision to have it in Lewis and we’re just along for the ride. It’s very fun and rewarding for Mike and I to watch these young business owners just flourish and have fun.”
Janke said Hilltop Creations is the name of their garden and they created a club where everybody that participates keeps track of their hours and time spent and at the end of their season they tally up those hours and give a percent of money earned and that’s how they divvy up their bounty for the year.
Hilltop Creations’ Farmer’s Market will be held Tuesday and Thursday nights from 4:30 to 6:30 in front of 3HO (the old Lewis Elementary building) through the middle of October.
