(Griswold) If you surveyed fans from Western Iowa Conference or Corner Conference schools about their favorite concession stand, odds are Griswold will be a popular choice.
The Griswold Sports Boosters takes great pride in their offerings and Brent Potter has been a central figure in all the work behind the scenes for many years. “Many people say it’s the best concession stand in the state of Iowa and I couldn’t argue. We get so many compliments on so many things including Raymond Butt’s famous popcorn that he made way back win and we try and make it as quality as he did.”
And then there’s the famous ice cream machine, which might be deserving of a few MVP votes. “That’s pretty much a hit. There’s been kids from Missouri Valley that say they’d rather play in Griswold twice a year instead of once in Griswold and once in Missouri Valley. That machine has served a lot of people and benefited the athletic department greatly. It’s hard to believe an ice cream machine could be that impactful, but it has done a lot.”
Potter is proud of the fact the Griswold Sports Boosters have donated at least $50,000 to the school for each of the last six years. His love for Griswold activities blossomed in junior high and he’s been a big part of it all ever since. The 1983 semifinal football team and 1984 state championship wrestling team caught his fancy. Those two sports were his main loves and the two he had a lot of team success with once he entered high school.
While Brent got the role as spokesman for this story, the whole Potter family has been involved for multiple generations starting with Brent’s dad Max and uncle Bruce. Brent and cousin Bryce, along with their parents could always be seen volunteering at Griswold wrestling events. Potter is thankful for the people that generously gave of their time when he was an athlete at Griswold and simply wants to return the favor. “When I was in school, someone was doing the same thing that I am doing. They were volunteering, they were being willing to step up and help out in any way they could. I feel if I could do my part in giving back, that’s meaningful to me and my wife and family.”
Potter’s wife Amie has been just as involved as he points out his four kids-Logan, Tanner, Madison, and Makenna have been his favorite Tigers to cheer on. His son Tanner helps in the press box during football and has coached junior high wrestling. His daughter in law Larissa is the high school girls track coach.
On behalf of the Sports Boosters he thanks all those that have donated during the annual auction and says it takes an entire community to do what they do.
KSOM/KS95.7 Sports wants to make special mention of Rich Mortensen who has worn an endless amount of hats and means so much to the Griswold community. Coming up on Monday is a visit with CAM’s Stacey Platt, Audubon’s Randy Lange will be featured on Tuesday, and we have an ace in the hole penciled in for Atlantic on Wednesday.
