(Greenfield) KSOM/KS95.7’s latest series saluting loyal fans takes us to Nodaway Valley where Linda and Randy Hennigar are die-hard followers of the Wolverine boys basketball program.
Of the over 600 games that Nodaway Valley has played in basketball the last 20+ years, the Hennigar’s have missed just a handful of them. Linda says it all started out when she got a job at Bridgewater-Fontanelle. She was active in athletics as a kid and wanted to be around it when she got her first teaching and coaching job.
As Linda puts it, her husband Randy kind of “adopts” all of the boys on the team.
Not only do they attend games to show support for the players, but also for coach Darrell Burmeister whose dedication they are impressed by.
Even in the offseason, you’ll likely find the Hennigars cheering for Nodaway Valley boys basketball at any possible opportunity. No distance is keeping them away from the games.
While basketball is their big passion, the Hennigars also give back to the school by serving as line judges during volleyball, a sport Linda used to coach.
Linda points to the team’s first substate win over Clarinda in 2005 as her favorite game while Randy prefers their state title run in 2006, specifically the semifinal win.
Of course the Hennigars aren’t the only loyal fans of Nodaway Valley. The Wolverines are well-known for their big basketball crowds, which has been fun for them to be a part of.
We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the Hennigar’s famous ham balls and cheesy potatoes.
Two basketballs are proudly displayed in cases at the Hennigar’s home. One is signed by the 2006 state championship team and the other is signed by the 2013 state qualifying team.
Tom Bingaman and Russ Armstrong were some of the other Nodaway Valley fans that were suggested for their support of the school and we know there are many more. Tomorrow we will hear from Harlan’s Maggie Hatcher.
