(Area) Atlantic has much to be proud of in boys tennis. The Trojans have won a dozen conference championships and boast five state team final four appearances. They also made the eight team state field as a team in 2017.
Among the most impressive achievements in program history is the 1989 state championship in doubles with Dave Figgins and Frank Dea. After dropping the first set of the finals to a duo from Camanche 3-6, Figgins and Dea responded by winning the next two 6-2, 6-3. Atlantic has not had a singles state champion, but a couple of guys were very close. Barry Twait fell short in the finals in 1985 to Ty Dennis (Camanche) 4-6, 6-1, 6-3. Tim Bauer lost a title match in 1991 to Kyle Cleveland (Maharishi, Fairfield) 6-3, 6-3. A big thank you to former head coach Stuart Dusenberry for sharing his records from 1985 through 2008. In their state final four appearances they were twice a runner-up. In 1989 they lost in the finals to Camanche, 5-4. In 2000 the runner-up finish was to Maharishi (Fairfield) 5-0. Team rosters from 1989 and 2000 are listed below.
Harlan’s notable accomplishments include a 2005 Hawkeye Ten Conference Championship and a pair of runner-up doubles teams in the 1980’s. In 1985 Pete Reuscher and David Thomsen teamed up to place 2nd while Dan Newlin and Jamie Burmeister took reserve honors in ’88.
Some of the Audubon greats include Craig Edsen, Curt Mace, Chad Hoffman (Mace and Hoffman went to state in doubles in 1990), Neil Grotelusion, Trent Edsen (1996 and 1997 singles state qualifier), and Ryan Edsen.
