(Atlantic) It took just 35 minutes for volunteers to distribute free eggs Saturday afternoon in the Iowa Western Community College campus parking lot in Atlantic.
An anonymous donor looking for a way to help others during the COVID-19 crisis funded the giveaway.
The donor is an Atlantic High School graduate who lives out of state. The eggs were purchased from Southwest Iowa Egg in Massena. The generous individual heard the egg farm was struggling to sell eggs, due supply chain limitations. So she reached out to the Cass County Local Food Policy Council, and they mobilized volunteers to distribute the eggs to the first 100 households.
Only one person from each household was allowed in the vehicle. The cars drove through a checkpoint, where volunteers wearing masks placed a flat of 30-eggs into the vehicle. In a matter of seconds, the vehicle left the parking lot. The eggs were clean and chilled, but ungraded and unwashed.
The event started at 1:00 p.m., and by 1:35 p.m., the eggs were gone.
