Track
The Cyclones sent an impressive 14 entries to state. They finished 3rd in the Hawkeye Ten Conference. A group of Jon Owens, Joseph Fah, Connor Bruck, and Thomas Fah won the Shuttle Hurdle, Jon Owens won the 400 Lows, Caleb Bieker and Derec Weyer went 2-3 in both shot put and discus, Michael Erlmeier was a conference runner up in both the 400 and long jump, and the 4X400 was 2nd with Brenden Bartley, Jonathon Monson, Jon Owens, and Michael Erlmeier. Erlmeier was a Drake Relays participant. Weyer, Bieker, and Erlmeier were all individual state medalists.

Golf
Harlan was 7th at the Hawkeye Ten Conference meet with Jay Swanson finishing 6th individually. Swanson led the team throughout the season with a 38.71 stroke average per nine and 85 stroke average per 18. Blake Goshorn and Mason Peters routinely counted towards the team score while Jacob Dotzler, Nathan Schiltz, and Darren Stein rounded out the varsity lineup.
Tennis
They didn’t post any dual wins, but did grab a runner-up spot in doubles at the conference tournament. Brock Bruns and Jonny Cheek went 2-1 at the Hawkeye Ten Tourney in number one doubles. Bruns put together a 5-5 record at #1 singles on the season.
Soccer
The boys soccer team has been strong in recent years with 30 wins over the past two seasons including a 14-8 record in 2019. The team got hot late in the season with an eight match win streak from April 26th through May 16th. In that stretch they outscored opponents 31-3. They ran into a buzz saw in the postseason with a 4-0 season ending loss to eventual state champ Lewis Central. The team posted a perfect home record of 6-0.

2019 Summer Sports
Baseball
The Cyclone streak of eight straight state tournament appearances finally came to an end. They went to the substate finals and finished the year at 26-8. Harlan started the year at 12-1 and scored 80 runs over their first six games. Head coach Steve Daeges went past 700 career wins. Western Illinois commit Brett Sears capped off his Harlan career with a 36-5 pitching record and 299 strikeouts. He was among the state leaders in several offensive and pitching stats in his senior year.

2019 Fall Sports
Cross Country
Trey Gross had a big season including a Hawkeye Ten Conference runner-up finish. The team placed 2nd in the conference meet. Isaac Jones was 10th at conference with Brennon Munch and Mitchell Rueschenberg both in the top 25. Dalton Gross, Kaiden Milliken, and Reed Boardman rounded out the varsity lineup. Gross and Jones both made the state meet. Gross finished 7th in Fort Dodge and Jones was 97th.
Football
Todd Bladt stepped in as the interim coach while Curt Bladt was still involved in the program. Harlan’s 7-2 regular season resulted in a state playoff appearance. They lost in the first round of the postseason to Dallas Center-Grimes by the low scoring final of 9-7. Harlan’s only other losses were to state semifinalist Sergeant Bluff-Luton and Glenwood. They posted an impressive victory over Lewis Central in Week 7.

Wrestling
Harlan shared the Hawkeye Ten Conference dual title with Atlantic/CAM and Creston/O-M. The Cyclones posted an overall dual record of 17-5. Ethan Lemon finished 7th at the state tournament while Carter Bendorf and Jesse Schwery also wrestled at state. Carter Bendorf was an individual champion at the Hawkeye Ten Conference Tournament.

Basketball
Connor Frame’s last second put back sent Harlan to the state tourney with a win over Denison-Schleswig. At state Harlan went up against #1 seed and eventual champion Norwalk and lost in the first round. The team won 18 games compared to seven losses. A senior trio of Connor Bruck, Johnathan Monson, and Michael Heithoff led the way as all three averaged in double figures. Monson led the team in rebounds while Bruck hit 48.1% from three-point range and 82.5% at the free-throw line. Coach Mitch Osborn surpassed 700 career wins and set an Iowa record by guiding his team to state.

Bowling
Samuel Andersen and Darren Stein had the top showings at the State Qualifying Meet in LeMars. Andersen rolled a 417 to place 5th and Steins 372 placed 10th. Harlan had a 19-15 record with a 2,594.2 pin average. Jake Dotzler had the best game average on the team at 176.3.
