(Oakland) Five seniors represent half of the returning lineup for the Riverside girls soccer team this season.
Riverside’s entire offense is back from a year ago. Goalkeeper Rhyan Sanny is the only loss to graduation. Coach Jill Applegate says Ashlynn Amdor, Maggie Boruff, Abi Petersen, Haylee Vlcek, and Mackenzie Britain are ready to lead the way. “They all have a lot of talent so I think they’ll be good leaders this year.”
Most of them have been in the program for three years. In fact, Amdor and Boruff ranked 1st and 2nd on the team in goals as freshmen and will be seeing their fourth year of varsity play. “I’ve been with them since they were freshman, I started as an assistant coach when they were freshmen and I’ve seen so much improvement.”
Amdor enters the season with nine career goals and Boruff has five. Coach Applegate has advised the players to work on their overall fitness as well as their soccer skills during the suspension of spring sports. “I’ve been keeping in touch with them an letting them know what’s going on. I’ve sent out practice drills for them to work on and core strengthening too.”
Applegate says the team’s communication on defense improved last season. This year they’ll look to teach the younger players some new positions and win a few more matches.
