(Hancock) Fire destroyed a single-story house in Hancock this (Wednesday) afternoon.
Hancock Firefighter Josh Billings said the fire was reported at 3:08 p.m. at 409 E. Duncan Street.
“When I got here the porch was fully involved on the north side of the house and the fire moved south through the house,” explained Billings.
The homeowner was at home with her daughter and some dogs and they were able to get out of the house safely.
Oakland Firefighter Brant Miller said the fire was most likely caused by discarded smoking materials.
“She said she was smoking a cigarette about an hour before and then her daughter saw the fire out front,” stated Miller.
The Hancock, Oakland, Avoca, and Walnut Fire Departments responded to the scene.
