(Guthrie Center) Spring athletes and coaches are holding out optimism for an opportunity to have a season. The ACGC boys have a deep roster this season with 46 athletes on the team.
ACGC is one of the only schools in this area that does have a competition under their belt. The Chargers competed at an indoor meet at UNI and one of the top performances was Quynton Younker’s throw of 45’10” in the shot put. That’s already four feet ahead of what he was throwing last year at this time.
Younker is a returning state qualifier and will be joined by another quality shot putter in Sam Madsen. Another positive from the Dickinson Relays in early March was Cayden Jensen’s jump of 19-07 in the long jump. He’ll be joined by Charlie Crawford to make a strong tandem of long jumpers.
Dubuque commit Austin Weirick returns as a top 400 meter runner. He’ll be joined by Trevin Suhr and Charlie Crawford as valuable mid-distance assets. Newcomer Mitchell Dickson and freshman Taye Faulkner also look to make an impact. Matthewson says accountability will show up once athletes return to group practices and eventually hold meets.
“In the situation that we are in it’s going to be an environment where you aren’t training with others. My philosophy has always been that competition breeds success. At the end of the day your true character is going to be revealed because the competition is between you and the man in the mirror.”
The roster size of 46 is up from 22 last season.
