(Des Moines) Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds says testing capabilities have been expanded at the State Hygienic Laboratory.
The Governor speaking during a press conference on Friday afternoon says three shifts are now running over a 24 hour period for a total of 162 tests daily. As of noon on Friday, the lab had enough testing supplies to test 620 individuals. She says that supply changes as in-stock supplies are used and more supplies are received or replaced, which is being monitored closely.
The Governor says while the majority of tests are conducted at the State Hygienic Lab, Health Care providers can also send samples to national labs across the nation. She says these national labs will be reporting both the positive and negative results to the State Hygienic Lab daily.”So regardless of our testing capacity, it’s important that we use all of our health care resources responsibly,” said Reynolds.
The Governor says testing is most important for those at the highest risk from a serious illness from COVID-19, and those on the front lines protecting Iowans from it. Testing is being prioritized for all patients with a fever or respiratory failure, and no alternative diagnosis. Older adults above the age of 60 with a fever, cough or difficulty breathing, or underlying conditions such as heart, lung, kidney disease or a weakened immune system. Testing is also done for individuals with a fever or long term illness living in dormitories, long term care, or correctional facilities. And essential services personnel with a fever or respiratory illness such as health care providers, EMS, law enforcement staff, and residential facility staff.
