(Harlan) Harlan graduate Eric Stein is entering his 2nd season as the head baseball coach at Iowa Central. After ten seasons as an assistant at his alma mater, Stein ascended to the top seat ahead of last season.
Stein spoke with KSOM/KS95.7 Sports for the weekly “Why I Coach” podcast and admits he’s not sure what he’d do for a living if he wasn’t coaching. “I don’t know if I could sit an an office and do something like that. I like the uniqueness of each day and being around 18-20 year old energetic college guys is fun. If I wasn’t doing this I have no idea where I’d be.”
After Stein’s playing career came to a close he wasn’t quite ready to say goodbye to the game. “When I finished playing college baseball I wanted to stay involved with the game. Coaching was an avenue to do that. I finished up at Grand View in Des Moines and got an opportunity back at Iowa Central where I played my first two years. Rick Pederson gave me a call and they had an opening. I was fortunate enough to jump right into this things.”
Stein refers to the Iowa Central gig as a dream job. Under Stein’s guidance the Tritons went 33-20 last season. They open up their 2020 season at Northern Oklahoma College-Enid next weekend.
