(Anita) Defending state qualifier CAM will open up the 2020 regional tournament with Griswold Thursday night in Anita. The game will be broadcast on KS95.7 FM with pregame at 6:45 and a 7:00 p.m. tip.
CAM goes into the postseason on a good note. They ended a four game skid in their regular season finale when they downed Paton-Churdan 51-34. Here’s Cougar coach Joe Wollum. “It was huge to get back in the win column. We beat a team that was on a run. We shot the ball better than we had in those previous losses. I think we feel like we got a monkey off our back and now are ready to roll into the postseason.”
Monday’s win over the Rockets moves CAM to 14-6 for the season. Griswold comes in with two wins on the year. CAM has had several players step up to help keep them among one of the top 1A teams in the area. “A couple of freshmen really have stepped up for us this year. Naomi Grubbs got her first start vs Paton-Churdan. She brings us some size. That really helps us out. Reese Snyder had one of her best 2nd halves against Paton-Churdan. Then we have experience too that helps us with Sammie Jahde and Zoey Baylor along with Allison Spieker and Molly Venteicher.”
Sammi Jahde and Zoey Baylor each average 12 points per game with Marissa Spieker at nine per night. The team is ramping things up at the most critical time of the year. “I really felt that way heading into the Paton-Churdan game. I think the girls were finally not happy with the way we were playing. More shots were going in at practice. They were paying more attention to our scouting report and executing the game plan. Our minds are right heading into the postseason.”
The winner advances to take on Heartland Christian or Riverside in Anita on Tuesday of next week.
