(Greenfield) For the first time in eight years the Nodaway Valley girls basketball team has earned a share of a conference championship. With co-leader Mount Ayr still having one game remaining, Nodaway Valley can do no worse than split the Pride of Iowa crown with the Raiderettes. A Bedford upset of Mount Ayr on Tuesday would make the Wolverines outright POI champs.
The clinching win for Class 2A #15 Nodaway Valley came over Lenox Friday at home by a final of 66-31. All five starters scored in double figures and the running clock rule was in effect for nearly the entire 2nd half. Lexi Shike helped the home squad get off to a quick start with an and-one on the first possession. Shike scored 10 of her 14 points in the first half. Maddax DeVault did all of her scoring in the 2nd quarter and tied for game high honors with 14. The Wolverines led 20-7 after one and 45-15 at the break.
Corinne Bond made the most of her low post touches immediately after halftime. Bond scored eight of her 13 points early in the third quarter. Seniors Reagan Weinheimer (11) and Alyssa Davis (10) continued the scoring balance for a Nodaway Valley team that won their 8th straight game to improves to 18-2.
Brooklyn Ecklin put in three 3-pointers for Lenox to lead the Tigers with nine points. They’ve been plagued by injuries and have lost 8/10 to drop to 9-10 overall. Lenox will close out the regular season at Stanton on Monday. Nodaway Valley has a big clash with AHSTW next week. The two ranked teams will get together Monday in Greenfield for a matchup that pairs the Western Iowa Conference champion with the Pride of Iowa Conference champion.
