(Waverly) Participation was sharply higher this season for the IWCOA Girls State Wrestling Tourney. The competition was held this weekend at Waverly-Shell Rock High School.
A runner-up finish for Riverside heavyweight Illiana Yanes was among the local highlights while another strong showing came from Bella Canada, of AHSTW. Canada placed 8th at 170. Yanes posted pins in the quarterfinals and semifinals, before being pinned by Salima Omari (Iowa City West) in the championship bout. Canada’s 8th place finish involved a 1st round bye and 2nd round pin to get to the quarterfinals. She lost her quarterfinal match 4-1, but responded with a pin in the consolation 4th round. Canada’s 6-2 loss to Leah Grimm (Osage) dropped her to the 7th place match where she lost by fall to Maggie Schroeder (Colfax-Mingo). Allison Baxter (152) also represented AHSTW and went 2-2 with a pair of pins to start out, before losing by fall in her final two matches.
Atlantic/CAM took three entries. Aleigh Bean (126) went 2-2, Kenzie Hoffman (152) was 1-2, and Lexie Trotter (195) also went 1-2.
Glenwood’s Abby McIntyre won the 132 pound title and Olivia Diggins (Logan-Magnolia) was the 138 pound runner-up.
